The Purdue Boilermakers hit the road for a matchup in the Gavitt Games with the Marquette Golden Eagles.  The Boilermakers are (1-1) on the season, coming off a 70-66 big loss at home to the Texas Longhorns.  The Golden Eagles (1-0) are coming off an 88-53 win over Loyola (MD) Greyhounds. Purdue and Marquette have met eight previous times with the Boilermakers coming out victorious in each matchup, with the most recent occurring in 2017.

Purdue is counting on Proctor, Stefanovic, and Hunter to make up for the loss of their top two scorers from last season in Carsen Edwards and Ryan Cline, who accounted for 47.3 percent of the team’s scoring. Purdue shot 41% (25 of 61) from the field, and 50% (8-for-16) from beyond the arc, but the Boilermakers permitted the Longhorns to connect on 53.3% of their shots overall, including 40.9% from long distance.

Purdue has 4 players in double-figures, Proctor leading with 19 points, on 57.1% shooting, and 4.5 rebounds. Stefanovic (14 points), Hunter (13.5), and Matt Haarms (12.5). They are shooting 45.9% from the field and 40% from the 3-point line. The Boilermakers are averaging 11 offensive rebounds, 14 assists, and 12.5 turnovers. Defensively, Purdue is allowing 63.5 points while letting their opponents shoot 43.5% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc.

Marquette was led by Markus Howard in the win over Loyola, making 11 of 20 field goals adding up 38 points.. Marquette shot 51% from the floor for the game and a 60% from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles held the Greyhounds to just 22% from deep.  The Golden Eagles struggled with 21 turnovers compared to the Greyhounds 10.  Sacar Amin and Utah State transfer Koby McEwen contributed 11 points apiece. Theo John added eight rebounds while McEwen, who was playing in his first game for the Eagles, hauled in seven boards.

Marquette is shooting 51.7% from the floor, and an incredible 60.9% percent on 3-pointers as the Eagles have drained 14 of 23 attempts. Defensively, Marquette is holding opponents to 30.8% shooting from the field and 22.2% from the 3-point line while allowing 10 offensive rebounds and forcing 10 turnovers.

Markus Howard leads Marquette in scoring with an average of 38.0 points per game. The leading rebounder for the Golden Eagles is Theo John with an average of 8.0 per game. Sacar Anim is the second leading scorer and the leader in assists with averages of 11.0 points and 4.0 assists per game.  Marquette Center Jayce Johnson is out with a knee injury.

The Golden Eagles rank 96th in possessions per game while the Boilermakers are 318th. The Boilermakers rank eighth in offensive efficiency (115.7), while the Golden Eagles rank 54th in defensive efficiency (97.6).

Both of these teams can put up some points so taking the Over seems like a no-brainer for sports bettors but they are also very strong defensive teams. The OVER has cashed in 4 of the Boilermakers last 5 and in each of the Golden Eagles last 4 versus an opponent from the Big Ten. Look for Purdue to avenge their loss to Texas and fight hard for a win in this offensive battle.
